You should be able to see from the change log / version history pages in the manual which minor version releases introduced incompatible changes to the table file format. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/news-4-1-x.html I would *guess* that you were using a pre-release version, because I would be surprised if a public release version in the 4.1 branch would be incompatible with its predecessor's file format.
