Why this list goes private I'll never know. I guess that's why I always get two copies.

In the errors log:

Found option without preceding group in config file: /etc/my.cnf at line: 1
Fatal error in defaults handling.  Program aborted

/var/log/ does indeed exist

root runs mysqld

Check that the user that runs mysql has permission to write to the
file and that /var/log exists.
