This becomes a pain when dealing with half a tera of database :)  I imagine it
gets worse in the terabyte range.

Oh yeah, but like an old dinossaur that worked with me few years ago
used to say. "If you can't hold three times the data needed, don't
bother holding it at all". One with such a big scheme should have a
mirror, plus backups, just in case.

Personally I have daily backups, a slave mirror and another backup of
the backup files (network server with TSM backups).
