You could have followed my suggestion sent to you 7 hours ago to check permissions on /var/run/mysqld ... and/or read the manual (it's in the installation notes!) to learn that in fact mysql runs as a non-root user. I have burned another 2 hours but got mysqld to run and have version 5 up and running! I'm now ready to get back to views. To get things running I had to manually make a directory /var/run/mysqld/ and then change the owner to mysql. I ran mysqld_safe and it made a mysqld.pif and is now running.
