MySQL won't seem to stop or start on 3 servers I've tried. I believe it
begins after an ungraceful shutdown ('mysqladmin shutdown' or 'mysql.server
stop' doesn't run).

I am running RedHat 7.0 and using MySQL-3.23.37-1 and MySQL-client-3.23.37-1
from mysql.com (also tried the 3.23.38 RPMs). I'm on a 586 and a couple of
dual PIII-650s. The 586 is a home build Socket 7 board and the PIIIs are
from a company called indybox (www.indybox.com).

I've completely uninstalled anything related to mysql and reinstalled... no
luck

I've looked through the mailing list and found a number of people with the
same problem, but none of the listing have solutions seem to work for me.

Lance had a very similar problem:

Same symptoms. Locks up with most mysqladim command options (version,
shutdown, etc.) He seems to have solved it by removing a line from his
S99system, which I don't have.

When I run 'mysql.server stop' I get a 'Wait for mysqld to exit' then a
bunch of ".\c"s and a 'gave up waiting!' message.

'mysql.server start' seems to run okay and the safe_mysqld and mysqld are
running in a ps, but I can't do anything from there. No connections-- local
or remote as any user, no ability to shutdown the server gracefully. no
usefull errors in the .err files.

Alex had another similar problem:

He seemed to have a permissions problem. I've tried running both the client
and the server as root, and tried modifying the files in /var/lib/mysql to
have various permissions... no luck.

I've been trying things for about 13hrs straight now and about to loose my
mind. Any help would be appreciated.
