I got the message:

[root@mothra /tmp]# safe_mysqld &

[1] 3922

[root@mothra /tmp]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from
/usr/local/var 
mysqld daemon ended


This is what I got when I rebooted the Linux server.

Try typing this on the command line:

safe_mysqld &

Then tell us what happens. :-)
