Don't see why it anywhen succeeds. My version of "mysqld" doesn't know "stop". 
As for "mysqladmin", it knows "stop", but, since that means "stop-slave", I 
doubt you want that. Maybe you want "mysqladmin ... shutdown".

Better first to read up.
