That did not work. I am doing a clean install by following the
instructions from http://www.mysql.com/doc/I/n/Installing_binary.html.
Did I miss something?

Seems your installing on a Linux / Unix system...
In te directory where your mySQL setup (such as mysql_install_db) is,
run
"make install" ... just type it at the command line.
