Try to use the ports collection (http://www.FreeBSD.org/ports) and do a:
----------
cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql323-server
make clean install
----------
It will install all things needed, if they aren't installed yet. =)
If you want I have packages of MySQL 3.23.40 compiled and optimized for a K6
processor and FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE. ;)
