I know I'm about to get in trouble with the FreeBSD people, but here goes:
I'm not a real big fan of FreeBSD's /usr/ports/ thing. My suggestion would be to
download the source in a TAR ball, unpack it, run:
% configure
% make
% make install
If that doesn't succeed, hollar back with the errors. I expect that this will be much
easier, and far less prone to problems.
