Sorry, but how did you start it the first time?

This depends on the distribution you are using, but usually you would
start it with something like (as root user):

/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start

or alternatively with the safe_mysqld program (which is called by the
above script).

In either case, the daemon should be detached automatically.
