Oops... Yup, according to page 57 of Mr. Dubois' MySQL COUNT() combined with DISTINCT is a 3.23.2+ feature... I'll be interested to see the proper answer to this... (besides 'upgrade' - I'm running 3.22 on one of my servers and don't intend to upgrade anytime soon because of complications with ChiliSoft...)
