Thanks to another member of the list - I found I had ownership problems,

> #chown -R root /usr/local/mysql
> #chown -R mysql /usr/local/mysql/var
> #chown -R mysql /usr/local/mysql

That solved it.   And thanks for the heads up on my date.  I live in 
Washington DC, so I'm behind the times.... :-)
