I assume the questions in the "status" of the MySql server refers to requests from clients. E.g. for me, with one db, questions is almost exactly the double of the number of (SQL) queries I issue. According to http://www.mysql.com/doc/S/H/SHOW_STATUS.html, questions refers to queries, which seems wrong. For my situation, I presume that the client library silently issues some query after opening the connection (like choosing the default database to work with).
