=when people talk of a "shell command", I tend to assume they are talking about Unix 
commands (or a Windows DOS
box). Mysqldump is a command that is typed at the MySQL command line - just as you 
would SELECT...

=to be honest, I rarely use it. Instead I use an administration package, eg 
MySQL-Front, which provides a GUI
and makes it much easier to perform many different functions (particularly including 
dump/export).
