TEXT datatype is limited to a maximum length of 65535 (2^16 - 1) characters. LONGTEXT allows up to 4'294'967'295 (2^32 - 1) characters, which is enuf for most applications. The real limitation is that fulltext indexing only works for VARCHAR and TEXT.
