Kathy, error message says that you don't use password for your 'root'
user.
How did you connect to MySQL server?

You can find examples of *.cnf in /usr/doc/MySQL-X.XX. 
Copy one of the file under the name "my.cnf" 
in /etc or in /usr/local/mysql/var.
