Try looking up the Nested Set Hierarchy structure, which is mainly discussed by Joe Celko. There are a number of discussions on usenet (groups.google.com) about it, by him. Also, here's a URL which gives his description. It's a good structure, and with modification, looks like it can fit about any hierarchy you've got.
