Thanks for all the responses I've received.

I managed to fix it just before the first response arrived :-)

I untar'd an old backup I had just to get mysql seeing the tables and fields
again, then used mysqldump.  After restarting mysql, I loaded the dumped
database back into mysql and all worked fine.
