Sorry to jump into the conclusions:) IT wasn't evena sub select and union is used to join the results of SELECT statements...
Your statement can be written as "SELECT location FROM visiExPr WHERE (location=1 OR location=0) GROUP BY location; What version of MySQL are you running? UNION is implemented in 4.0.0. IF you have 3.x.x it won't work...
