Errno 13 on starting mysqld

I am using SUSE 8.0
on a 586 computer
I installed MYSQL 3.23.48 from the Suse-CD (By the while four times)

At first I was running (as described in
/usr/share/doc/packages/mysql/README.Suse )
"rcmysql start" as root from /var/lib/mysql/ (and later from /usr/bin/)

Console messages were:
        Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
        mysql ended

contents of /var/lib/mysql.log were

        020605 13:07:02  mysqld started
        020605 13:07:02  /usr/sbin/mysqld: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm'
                       (errno: 13)
        020605 13:07:02  mysqld ended

The same was, when I was running (as regarded by Kevin Donelly in
[EMAIL PROTECTED]):
   mysql_install_db
   safe_mysqld &

The file host.frm exists as /var/lib/mysql/mysql/host.frm

I think,that any environment-variable has to be setted
to tell mysqld where it can find this file.

The following lines are from the script /etc/init.d/mysql:
(As I can understand, this script is starting mysqld)

        # The following section has been taken from
        # the original MySQL init script
        basedir=/usr
        datadir=/var/lib/mysql
        mysql_daemon_user=mysql
        pid_file=/var/lib/mysql/mysqld.pid
        socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

In this script follow some lines, which I cannot understand completely -
I think there is mainly checked, if theese directories really exist.

running safe_mysqd --help
brings in /var/lib/mysql/mysqld.log:

020606 18:06:57  mysqld started

To see what values a running MySQL server is using, type
'mysqladmin variables' instead of 'mysqld --help'.
The default values (after parsing the command line arguments) are:

So, after a week of learning about Suse and Mysql in this object,
I hope anyone can help me, to make mysql running.
Thanks,
