You didn't answered my question...
Did you installed MySQL for the first time? If so, by default MySQL has
user 'root' (without a password) with full privileges and anonymous
user that has access only to the database 'test'.
Have you tried to connect as user 'root' without a password, i.e
mysql -uroot
?
