I can't think of any reason to have that many fields. It really starts to make the databases structure unmanageable, or at least difficult and time consuming to manage. It also can make it very difficult to create a good, flexible search interface. Filemaker might be an exception because of the way it's relations work and the limited options you have for displaying related information. Searching on related fields in FileMaker also gives you a very generous performance hit. :)
I usually try to design my databaes "vertically" instead of "horizontally". For instance, each phone number for someone would be a record in another table, rather than having separate field for home, work, cell, fax, etc. This gives you much more flexibility, like tracking 3 home phones, 2 cell phone, 2 faxes, and a work phone.
