You should be able to:

1. Shut down the server.
2. Copy all the files from your data directory (including the grant tables,
etc.) to where you would like them.
3. Change the location in your /etc/my.cnf file   (Assuming a linux server.
It should be similar for other architectures.)
4. Make sure all your file permissions are ok -- that your mysql user can
see them.
5. Restart the server.

It worked for me.

You can see other options for your my.cnf file by looking at the
instructions for installing MySql.
