First, you can upgrade your MySQL using RPM ... just search the binary from
rpmfind.net/linux/RPM ... you'll find it
Second, you just extract and configured your MySQL from tarball, for example : just
put it into /usr/local/mysql ...
and then stop the old mysql daemon, configure the my.cnf to point to existing data
dir, and just start the new mysql daemon ;-)
