What version of OS X are you running? Jaguar (10.2.0) is noticeably
faster. You can do an upgrade, but a fresh install is better.

The wireless on the cheaper iBook is much better than my PowerBook G4.
My wireless is shorter range and somewhat more directional. Not a
problem most of the time, but I still have a Cisco Aeronet card from my
old PC laptop that is well supported by OS X and has much better range.
So I use the Aeronet if I am going to be farther from the WAP.

Check out the fink project if you haven't already. It's on
SourceForge. Gives you Debian-like "apt-get" functionality under OS X.
This is not how I installed MySQL, though; there is a nice Mac
native package for MySQL under OS X.
