Actually, this is a different problem - our Linux binaries are statically
linked against a patched glibc to allow more than 1024 concurrent threads.
Unfortunately this seemed to have caused the mysqld process to run wild under
certain circumstances and it took us a while to reproduce and isolate this
problem. BTW: thanks to everyone who helped us with feedback about this!
