MYSQL start hangs term..

Hello,
starting mysql-3.23.32 on ydlinux from the command prompt. freezes the current terminal, BUT the mysql server is running, i can access it from outside or a new term.
#safe_mysqld & or just #safe_mysqld, tried both. can't find anything in the man. thanks--Joe M
