starting Mysql on linux

i have installed redhat 8 and slackware linux and been trying to get mysql to run. when i get to the console and type 'mysql' i get, error 2002; cant connect to local mysql server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' i have tried to run mysqld through the console but says it cant find the command. i'm not really linux or mysql savy. any help on getting it to run would be great.
