I do some development (of MySQL Connector/J) on RedHat-8.0 with MySQL AB official binaries, and it works fine. The RedHat binaries don't work with remote connections. On top of that, RedHat has released an errata that fixes this problem for RedHat-7.3 and older, but hasn't fixed 8.0 :(
