Try starting mysqld with /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld. And if you want to start it at boot, link to /etc/rc/d/rc3.d(or rc5.d)/S98mysqld or something like that. RedHat has a program to write the link for you, but I cannot remember what that is, sorry
