Trouble after installing MySQL

I am having problems getting mysql working. I used the rpm packages to install the mysql and mysql-max. It seems like they are running because when I use telnet to try to connect to the port 3306 all I get is a message saying E Host 'ip' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server. However, when I try to run bin/mysqladmin it gives me errors saying that it cannot connect to localhost. I have installed this through ssh to my linux box, could it be that because I am not physically at my computer, but using ssh that it is not working? Please any help would be great. Thanks,
