I am sorry, my bad. I misrepresented the versions of mysql I am using. Must
have been a typo.
Here is what I am using.

  Master: Sparc Solaris 7   MySQL 4.0.9-gamma-log
  Slave:  RedHat Linux 7.2  MySQL 4.0.8-gamma-log.

Could you continue to help me with this ?

Since 3.23.32 there were a lot of bug fixed related to the replication. 
Please, upgrade servers and test it again.
