On Mac OS X (also FreeBSD Unix), a new installation installs the new version in another folder and changes the /usr/local/mysql symbolic link to point to the new installation (in the same folder) but the old installation is intact there aswell. So navigate to /usr/local and see what you have there. When I upgraded to 4.0.12 I just moved the data folder from the old installation to the new installation.
