mysql.server or ${MYSQL}/bin/sae_mysqld the tty stays connected.

This may be a function of your operating system. I notice this when I connect via ssh from Mac OS X to another system, start a background process, and exit. I have to ~ + Ctrl-Z, then kill -9 the ssh job.
I do not observe this behavior from, e.g., Linux.
