They are used to support the SSL-related clauses of the GRANT statement (and hence, secure connections).

The default value is the empty string for all of them.


I am having a heck of a time working with the mysql gui's and adding records to this table

Generally, it's easier to use the GRANT statement than to add records to the user table directly.
