I haven't used unicode yet, but I use this setting in the my.cnf file:

default-character-set=ujis

Do you understand that Asian characters are using 2 bytes for each character ? 
It's not like English, German etc, which use the alphabet. 
This will restrict you also on the functions which you can use. Not all 
functions are yet double byte safe. The manual is discusssing this in more 
details.
