I just reinstalled because of this same issue. Now root has no priviledges or functions within MySQL. Does anyone know how to fix this? My data isn't important -- i just started (and I am a hopeless newbie!)
It doesn't let root do squat. I was trying to give 'root' a password. Entered the following command: mysqladmin -u root password ******** Now root is gone.
