yes, I can set interactive_timeout to a value in my.cnf
(interactive_timeout=30). This works! However, as a side-effect,
wait_timeout is *also* set to 30.

You could try 

show variables like "%timeout%";

perhaps interactive_timeout

 can help you out ?
