Sorry, I forgot to include the version of mysql. I am running 4.0.16 from the binary archive(tar.gz) on the mysql.com download page. I did have the same problem on 4.0.15 and upgraded yesterday to 4.0.16.
I was running 4.0.15 since it came out before this problem suddenly reared its ugly head yesterday. If anyone has any input on the crash I am dealing with I will be eternally grateful.
