There isn't another way.

Slow? How many tables are we talking about?
I'm talking about nearly 20 000 tables in a database. In this case a SHOW TABLE STATUS commande takes about 20-30 seconds.
Hm, that is pretty slow. How long does an "ls" command in the database directory take?
