I'm doing just that right now. I built from source and put mysql4 in /usr/local/mysql and mysql5 in /usr/local/mysql5 with the my.cnf is /usr/l.ocal/mysqlX/var. In the my.cnf file I put the local sockets into /usr/local/mysqlX/tmp and mysql5 is using port 3305 with mysql4 on 3306.

The toughtest thing I bumped into was the permissions for the var and tmp directories weren't set correctly by make install.
