Specifically I get the following error when attempting to start the server:

Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
040122 22:09:21 mysqld ended

And when I try to connect I get an error (as expected)

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Please try to make the ownership consistent for all the directories/subdirectories and files from the root of mysql. Now I am not on the Linux system, cannot say more detailly. I hope it helps.

If that helps narrow down what's going wrong.

A few quick questions for installing on red hat 9 (on a funky old Pentium 2 333mhz machine with 256MB ram).

When I attempt to install the rpm for the server I get a HUGE list of conflicts with an existing install of mysql (3.53.x). Weird thing is, I've never installed MySQL on this machine and I specifically specified that it was not to be installed when I installed red hat.

So, after hours of attempting to resolve those conflicts, trying to get a binary install up and running, and failing miserably at a source install... I'm stumped.

Has anyone run into this problem? What can be done to fix it?

Many thanks. MANY thanks to whomever can help me with this.
