Although, you can try bdb(www.sleepycat.com), it comes with a java access class that will let you use bdb in a embeded environment, one thing i must say, is that it does not use jdbc, instead it uses it's own access methods, quite easy btw.

It is being planned, however it's not as straightforward as one would think if you still want to have JDBC-like access. There are also issues with Java threads and 'native' threads co-existing on some platforms.
