I compiled mysql-4.0.18 from ports on CURRENT machine with BUILD_STATIC=yes option with libpthread.
After installation everything seemed OK. However after few minutes it hang again.
It seems mysql with libpthread is even more unstable than using linuxthreads.

None, it's the default threading lib with a recent -current. You just have to recompile (every application which may use threads, since mixing the thread libs is not possible, alternatively you can have a look at the man-page of libmap.conf).
