I ran ./bin/safe_mysqld &

and got: 

[1] 3328

root # Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/mysql/data

and the cursor hangs on the next line down ...

Try ls to see whether safe_mysqld is in the directory and the run:

Safe_mysqld &

Note! You have to be root to run the mysqld demon
