Yes, the -v playback would be useful (in fact, necessary). If you can update your vlc, or install mplayer (http://www.silicongadget.com/guides/software-guides/multimedia-software-guides/update-mplayer-on-ubuntu/2119/), that would also be helpful to understand if it is a problem specifically with MythTV, or if you are dealing with a copyrighted disc that isn't supported on Linux yet.
