Ian, to add facts to the fire about how different processors perform on mpeg decoding, it would be great if you could report back typical CPU usage/idle times for your system while it is decoding a 1080i video or 720p video, perhaps from mpstat to see what both processors are doing. Right now in my tests the P4-hyperthreaded is blowing away the equivalently "numbered" athlon, but it would be great to get more real world examples.
