sure its a config that got screwed up somewhere, but I don't know where to look. Recordings and live tv have the same problem, even recordings that were made previously that i've seen with sound!!!

Sound depends on the hardware. If you are using PVR-25/350 the most likely cause is that msp3400 was replaced. Often happens with online installation of a new kernel. In both the ivtv doc and mythtv doc there is referrence to this problem.
