Look at the OS issue this way. Start out by trying knopixMyth and if it doesnt play give the system config howto maintained by Jarod a try and then back to your existing distro. You will gain a lot of good experience. In a couple of weeks we are expecting to see a new release so you will probably want to wait until that arrives before settling on a final solution. The new release should support your hardware better.
